in building/getting a destylator for indoor use!

You should tell us about your expectations before we'll start giving you advises. Some info about capability of the boiler, way of heating and kind of system (reflux or pot-still). What sort of mash do you want to produce - sugar-based or fruit-based?

Are You a beginner or advanced distiller? Have You ever distilled anything?

People on this site (including me) will help You to build a distiller on your own with available materials such as copper pipes, steel pots etc.

Ive been googling / reading for some time about everything from plastic-stills
to simple pot stills. But still I dont like the the gluing and "solvents" used in these
types. But Ive found the column-stills (reflux?) quite interesting, but I cant really see how
I will be able to do the welding necessary for these.

My dream is an smaller keg (around 10l) with an internal electrical heater + some kind
of simple and efficient column ( possible to distill closer to 96% spiritus for my goralski herbata) Im a newbie distiller, but a somehow advanced brewer!

What is the basic equipment needed, and where do I get it?

You always can take the materials to the welder- cost won't be high.



If you dont need a large tank- like 30l or 50l beer KEG- you can use a smaller Pepsi or Cola KEG. It has 19 litres of capacity and is really easy to use. You can buy it online, on eBay or polish Allegro.pl. If you don't feel good with buying stuff on polish sites, somebody from board will help you

Rest of the meterials- like steel- you might also buy on Allegro, or in online shops like heco.pl. Heco's salesmen speak English, so you wont have problems with communication

Silicone tubes and glass cooler you can buy on Allegro.pl too or shops like http://www.euro-win.pl/sklep/ . Again- if you dont feel confident enough to buy something at polish online stores- somebody will help you

I was thinking about making one of those columns, maybe in cobber. I know
of some retail, plumber stores, Im sure they can help me.

The idea with heating element in Pepsi KEG is good- but you should consider installing two- one- let's say- 2000W, and the second one for example 1000W. Thus you will be able to use 3kW for pre-heating and than 1kW for process of destillation, when mash will be hot.

Ive seen the project, but I dont know what I think about it. Is it efficient/safe enough?
Is it open in the top, im thinking about pressure build-up. I can see that there is no cooling on the product-tube. Alcohol vapor in my apartment could get really bad.

No additional cooling is needed when the internal copper coil is long enough. This system is the simpliest Nixon-Stone's column - a simplified Bokakob type. You can adjust the reflux ratio with only one external valve and you collect hot but liquid alcohol.
There's no pressure and also no vapor getting out of the distiller.

Every Nixon-Stone based project guarantees safety. The total efficiency is also high (as I read) and depends on the efficiency of the cooling coil and heating power.
